Date Bar For Your Fit Valentine

If your date lifts or runs, they may turn their nose up at traditional candy treats. However, these macro trackers usually cannot resist the word Protein and Energy 😀 I found this recipe for a Date Bar in The Complete Family Cook Book. I was quite reluctant to make this as my son doesn’t like fruits and nuts, but he doesn’t lift or run anyway so he doesn’t really need this 😀 My daughter and I just wolf these down, and I can testify that I become full of energy after even a single bar.

Date Bar For Your Fit Valentine

Nutritive Value

Almonds and cashew nuts contain, on average, 21g of vegetable protein per 100g. They also provide 655 Calories (Almonds) and 596 Calories (Cashew nuts) per 100g. The dates give 317 Calories per 100g. In addition to this, the flour and the two sugars provide an explosion like dynamite that will turn you into a dynamo! The 4 eggs add 13.3g of animal protein per 100g which is great for muscle building. And if all this wasn’t enough, the almonds, cashew nuts, and dates give 5.09g, 5.81g, and 7.3g of iron per 100g. respectively, making this an exceptionally nutrient dense treat that is definitely not for couch potatoes!

Ingredients

  • 2 C Maida (Refined Wheat Flour)
  • 2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 C White Sugar
  • 1 C Brown Sugar
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1 ½ C of finely chopped Dates
  • ¾ C chopped skinless Almonds
  • 1 C chopped Cashew Nuts
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • ½ tsp Nutmeg Powder
  • Butter for greasing

Method

  1. Soak the almonds in warm water for about 3 hours. Drain, remove skin, and chop lengthwise.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180° C/350° F.
  3. Grease a 14”x8” pan.
  4. Beat the eggs.
  5. Add the sugars and salt and beat till most of the sugar is dissolved.
  6. Sift the flour with baking powder.
  7. Add the flour to the egg mixture in small quantities and mix.
  8. Add the dates, nuts and the nutmeg powder to the batter and mix well. See to it that the dates do not clump in the batter.
  9. Spread the mixture in the pan.
  10. Bake until firm and delicately brown – about 30 minutes.
  11. Cool the pan on a wire rack and cut into bars.

Note

I prefer seedless dates as they are not as sticky as the dates with seeds.
